Matt Reilly Superman Boardslide
WHO HAD THE ORIGINAL IDEA?
Well a couple of weeks back Matt did a lay back Superman, also known as the Limbo Slide: two boards, feet in front, hands out the back. This paved the way for double board sliding, and using one’s hands as feet. On this particular night I was about to ask Matt to try the Superman, but as I thought it, Mike requested it. So it was Mike, but it was an inevitable progression. It was destiny.
WHO NAMED IT?
I don’t know if we named it that night. But the next morning I got a message from Casey (Foley) asking: “Can you pleeeeease send me a video from Matt’s Superman last night? Ha ha.” So naming rights have to go to Ducky for sure.
THERE SEEMS TO BE A FEW PEOPLE FILMING MULTIPLE ANGLES? WHO WHERE THEY?
Myself and Mike Martin. Casey was on choreography.
I’M PRETTY DAMN EXCITED ABOUT THIS TRICK, WHAT WAS THE VIBE LIKE WHEN YOU GUYS FIRST REALISED IT MIGHT ACTUALLY WORK?
Utter hysteria. I missed the first attempt, but I heard Mike and Casey lose it proper. They were crying. And Matt was giggling on his belly in the bushes after the failed attempt. As soon as I viewed a real attempt I knew that Matt had the core strength needed for this ground breaking move.
WHAT ARE THE OTHER VARIATIONS THAT WENT DOWN?
On that night I was sidelined from a hefty slam, so I saw most of the antics. I guess the best thing about this curb is its slide speed is actually faster than rolling on the jetty. So once you are on you have a fun, stable, accelerating journey. This allows for crazy mid sliding antics for the jesters amongst us, and this night Mike (Martin) and SuperMatt were on fire. What did I see? Well the old hat off the head and through the legs. But that is not innovation. I did see Mike do a hands in pockets 12 metre boardslide. Mike also follow filmed whilst sliding (see second embedded video). Oh and Mike did the flamingo slide (a one footed boardie). They took selfies and SMSed em to me whilst sliding (see still shot). Matt of course did the now-infamous Superman and also the Superman complete with two push ups during horizontal extension.
DO YOU THINK THERE ARE ANY OTHER VARIATIONS POSSIBLE?
I would personally love to see a frontside reverse Superman, and a frontside Limbo Slide. Matt nearly did “The Superman in a Storm”, which is basically a standard Superman with the leading board thrown into a Hurricane before exit.
NOW THAT YOU’VE RECOVERED FROM YOUR SLAM CAN WE EXPECT ONE OF THESE FROM YOU?
The Superman is really a trick for the young and limber. So that cancels my involvement on two levels. But know who knows. Let’s just say it is a dream of mine. HOW RAD IS IPHONE FILMING? I feel i-phones in general have changed the world for the worse. I liked it when people used to look around at their surroundings and soak it up, rather than staring into the inter web abyss. We are always trying to look at other places other than where we are these days. But all that said and done they are a great medium for sharing things as awesome as The Superman. The morning after I put the clip on my instagram I noticed that kingpin had reposted and it was subsequently shared by a website in Iceland. Not even Clark Kent himself had that kind of global coverage.
My mind is exploding thinking about how hilarious some of these variations and names are. If I ever see the “superman in a storm” go down in street league i’ll probably die from laughter.
